September 16–17, 2027 | Bay St. Louis, Mississippi
Two-Day Workshop | $595
Lunch included each day

Join watercolor artist Wyatt Waters for two days of plein air painting in beautiful Bay St. Louis, Mississippi — where the character of the Gulf Coast provides an ever-changing mix of water, boats, architecture, light and color.

With its walkable downtown, working waterfront, coastal views and unmistakable sense of place, Bay St. Louis offers an ideal setting for painting outdoors. Over the course of two days, participants will explore subjects that may include colorful downtown streetscapes, boats along the waterfront, views across the bay and the graceful span of the Bay St. Louis Bridge.

The workshop is designed for watercolor painters of all experience levels. Wyatt will demonstrate his approach to seeing and simplifying a scene, establishing strong values, working with color and capturing the atmosphere of a place without becoming overwhelmed by detail.

Throughout the workshop, Wyatt will paint alongside the group, demonstrate his process and work individually with participants as they develop their own paintings.

What to Expect

Each day will include a combination of demonstration, instruction and plenty of time to paint.

Wyatt’s teaching emphasizes learning how to see — identifying what is most important in a scene, understanding value relationships and making intentional choices before and during the painting process. Participants will also work on composition, drawing, color, light and developing the confidence to respond to what is happening in front of them.

Because this is a plein air workshop, our painting locations will be selected with both the subject and conditions in mind. Possible subjects include:

  • The boats and waterfront of Bay St. Louis
  • Downtown architecture and streetscapes
  • Coastal cottages and landmarks
  • Views of the Bay St. Louis Bridge
  • Water, reflections and changing coastal light
  • People and everyday activity around town

Part of the experience is learning to adapt to the conditions that make plein air painting both challenging and rewarding — changing light, weather, movement and the unexpected.

A Coastal Painting Experience

Bay St. Louis has the kind of visual variety Wyatt loves to paint — boats tied along the water, historic buildings, broad skies, reflections, changing coastal light and the activity of a small Southern town.

Rather than simply painting pictures of Bay St. Louis, the goal of these two days is to slow down, look carefully and discover what makes a particular moment or place worth painting.

Come prepared to paint, experiment and enjoy two days immersed in watercolor on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
