October 21–22, 2027 | Shack Up Inn | Clarksdale, Mississippi
Two-Day Workshop | $575
Breakfast & Lunch included each day

Join watercolor artist Wyatt Waters for two days of plein air painting in the Mississippi Delta at the legendary Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale.

Few places offer the visual personality of the Delta. Weathered buildings, old signs, agricultural landscapes, rusted metal, porches, juke-joint character and the wide-open Mississippi sky create subjects filled with texture, history and story. The grounds of the Shack Up Inn provide an especially rich environment for learning to find beauty and composition in the unexpected.

The workshop is designed for watercolor painters of all experience levels. Wyatt will share his approach to seeing and simplifying a scene, establishing strong values, working with color and capturing the atmosphere of a place without becoming overwhelmed by detail.

Each morning, Wyatt will begin with a painting demonstration, sharing his process and decision-making as he works. Participants will then spend the remainder of the day painting, with Wyatt working individually with each person to offer guidance, feedback and instruction.

What to Expect

Each day will include a combination of demonstration, instruction and plenty of time to paint.

Wyatt’s teaching emphasizes learning how to see — identifying what is most important in a scene, understanding value relationships and making intentional choices before and during the painting process. Participants will also work on composition, drawing, color, light and developing the confidence to respond to what is happening in front of them.

Because this is a plein air workshop, painting locations will be selected with both the subject and conditions in mind. Possible subjects include:

  • The historic shacks and buildings of the property

  • Porches, signs and architectural details

  • Old trucks, equipment and found objects

  • Delta fields and landscapes

  • Weathered textures and structures

  • The people and personality of the Mississippi Delta

Part of the experience is learning to adapt to the conditions that make plein air painting both challenging and rewarding — changing light, weather, movement and the unexpected.

Painting the Delta

The Delta rewards artists who are willing to look beyond the obvious. A faded sign, an old building, a piece of farm equipment or a long shadow across a porch can become an extraordinary painting when you learn how to really see it.

The goal of these two days is to simplify, observe and respond — capturing not every detail, but the character and feeling that make the Mississippi Delta unlike anywhere else.

Come prepared to paint, experiment and spend two days immersed in watercolor, Delta character and a place with stories in every direction.
