Join watercolor artist Wyatt Waters for two days of plein air painting along the beautiful shores of Mobile Bay at The Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama.

With its sweeping waterfront views, moss-draped live oaks, historic architecture, gardens, boats and unmistakable coastal atmosphere, Point Clear offers an exceptional setting for painting outdoors. The Grand Hotel and its surrounding landscape provide an abundance of subjects within a setting that is both relaxed and visually inspiring.

The workshop is designed for watercolor painters of all experience levels. Wyatt will share his approach to seeing and simplifying a scene, establishing strong values, working with color and capturing the atmosphere of a place without becoming overwhelmed by detail.

Each morning, Wyatt will begin with a painting demonstration, sharing his process and decision-making as he works. Participants will then spend the remainder of the day painting, with Wyatt working individually with each person to offer guidance, feedback and instruction.

What to Expect

Each day will include a combination of demonstration, instruction and plenty of time to paint.

Wyatt’s teaching emphasizes learning how to see — identifying what is most important in a scene, understanding value relationships and making intentional choices before and during the painting process. Participants will also work on composition, drawing, color, light and developing the confidence to respond to what is happening in front of them.

Because this is a plein air workshop, painting locations will be selected with both the subject and conditions in mind. Possible subjects include:

• Mobile Bay and the waterfront

• Boats, piers and coastal views

• The grounds and architecture of The Grand Hotel

• Moss-draped live oaks and gardens

• Reflections and changing light on the water

• People and activity around the resort

Part of the experience is learning to adapt to the conditions that make plein air painting both challenging and rewarding — changing light, weather, movement and the unexpected.

The workshop fee includes:

• Two full days of watercolor instruction with Wyatt Waters

Painting Point Clear

There is something particularly suited to watercolor about the landscape around Mobile Bay — broad skies, shifting reflections, old trees, boats and light that can change a scene within minutes.

The goal of these two days is not simply to record what is in front of you, but to learn how to recognize what makes a scene worth painting and how to translate that experience into watercolor.
