Two-Day Workshop | $575
Lunch included each day

Join watercolor artist Wyatt Waters for two days of plein air painting in Taylor, Mississippi, on the grounds of the aptly named Plein Air community.

Just outside Oxford, Taylor offers the character of a small Mississippi town combined with the thoughtful architecture, green spaces and inviting streetscapes of Plein Air. Porches, cottages, gathering spaces and the surrounding North Mississippi landscape provide an abundance of subjects for two days devoted to painting outdoors.

The workshop is designed for watercolor painters of all experience levels. Wyatt will share his approach to seeing and simplifying a scene, establishing strong values, working with color and capturing the atmosphere of a place without becoming overwhelmed by detail.

Each morning, Wyatt will begin with a painting demonstration, sharing his process and decision-making as he works. Participants will then spend the remainder of the day painting, with Wyatt working individually with each person to offer guidance, feedback and instruction.

What to Expect

Each day will include a combination of demonstration, instruction and plenty of time to paint.

Wyatt’s teaching emphasizes learning how to see — identifying what is most important in a scene, understanding value relationships and making intentional choices before and during the painting process. Participants will also work on composition, drawing, color, light and developing the confidence to respond to what is happening in front of them.

Because this is a plein air workshop, painting locations will be selected with both the subject and conditions in mind. Possible subjects include:

  • The architecture and streetscapes of Plein Air

  • Porches, cottages and architectural details

  • Landscaped green spaces and gathering areas

  • Taylor’s small-town character

  • Trees, fields and the surrounding North Mississippi landscape

  • People and everyday activity within the community

Part of the experience is learning to adapt to the conditions that make plein air painting both challenging and rewarding — changing light, weather, movement and the unexpected.

Painting Taylor

Taylor offers the kind of subjects that reward careful observation — an inviting porch, an interesting roofline, trees framing a building, a quiet street or the way afternoon light moves across a familiar Southern landscape.

The goal of these two days is not simply to reproduce a scene, but to learn how to recognize what gives it character and translate that feeling into watercolor.

Come prepared to paint, experiment and enjoy two days immersed in watercolor and the distinctive character of Taylor, Mississippi.
